Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum cleaners are indispensable tools for keeping our facility clean and play a vital role in capturing dust, allergens, and bacteria, preventing them from recirculating into the air. However, if vacuums are not cleaned effectively after use, they can cause the spread of these contaminants rather than containing them.

Cleaning the vacuum cleaner after each use prolongs its lifespan, improves suction power and efficiency, and helps maintain a clean and healthy home environment.  Following these simple steps and referring to the manufacturer's instructions, you can keep your vacuum cleaner in excellent condition for years.

Cleaning after use

Unplug the vacuum cleaner from the power source to ensure your safety and prevent any accidental mishaps while cleaning the device

Remove the dust canister or reusable bag

Empty the contents into a waste bag, do not allow the contents to spill

Wash the dust canister, or clean the bag, according to the manufacturer's instructions and leave it to air dry before placing it back into the vacuum cleaner

For vacuums with a disposable dust bag, put the whole bag into the waste bag and put a new disposable bag into the vacuum

Clean or replace the filters daily according to the manufacturer's instructions

Washable filters should be rinsed under running water, thoroughly dried, and reinserted

Remove hair and debris from the brush roll using scissors or a seam ripper to carefully cut away any entangled hair or fibres and then pull or remove them

Some vacuum cleaners have removable brush rolls for easy cleaning. If applicable, remove the brush roll and clean it using warm water and mild detergent. Ensure it is completely dry before reinstalling it

Clean any attachments, e.g. crevice tools, upholstery brushes, and pet hair attachments. Detach these accessories and clean them thoroughly using a damp cloth or brush. Pay close attention to ensure any debris or dirt that might be stuck in the bristles, crevices or tubes is removed

Wipe the exterior with a mild detergent to remove accumulated dirt, dust, or smudges. For specific materials or finishes, refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for appropriate cleaning methods

Once you have completed all the cleaning steps, allow your vacuum cleaner to dry completely, ensuring all parts are dry, including the filters, dust canister/bag, and attachments

Store the vacuum cleaner in a clean, dry area away from excessive heat, cold or moisture

Maintenance

Replace disposable filters as recommended by the manufacturer

Any damage to the vacuum must be reported to maintenance immediately, e.g. broken parts, exposed wires, etc.
