Treatment of Wound Infections

If a wound infection has been identified

Assess pain

Provide pain relief if required

Administer medications to relieve symptoms, if required and prescribed

Determine the size, depth, and location of the damaged tissue

A wound's type and characteristics, as well as the wound's odour and drainage, should be determined

Clean the wound with an aseptic technique and apply sterile and or antibacterial dressings

If unclear about a wound or dressing needed, contact a wound specialist for a review

Monitor factors that influence tissue integrity, e.g. mobility limitations, incontinence, wound drainage, sweat, and other health conditions

Treatment

The Doctor may prescribe antibiotics if bacteria is in the wound based on the results of a wound swab. Treat a severe wound infection immediately, especially if there are additional symptoms such as fever, feeling unwell, or discharge. A Doctor or wound specialist may perform a debridement procedure if the wound contains dead or dirty tissue. In addition to promoting healing, debridement should prevent the spread of infection.
