Treatment of VRE

If a VRE infection has been identified, refer symptoms to the registered nurse

Nursing care

Assess for further signs of infection

Ensure contact precautions are taken with residents infected or colonized with VRE

When possible, residents with VRE will have a single room

All employees must wear gloves and gowns when entering the resident's room and when providing care

Visitors might also be asked to wear gloves and gowns

Healthcare workers and visitors remove their gowns and gloves upon leaving the room

Promote antimicrobial stewardship

Treatment

If VRE is not causing an infection, it is not always treated.  If there are signs and symptoms of infection, the Doctor will prescribe an antibiotic that is not Vancomycin.  Sometimes the Doctor will send samples to the laboratory to identify which is the most appropriate antibiotic to prescribe.
