Treatment of UTIs

If a urinary tract infection (UTI) has been identified, refer symptoms to the registered nurse

• Monitor and assess for pain

• Collect a urine sample to send to the lab

• Check vital observations, expecially temperature

• Administer medication if prescribed by the doctor

• Encourage water intake

• Encourage resident to void frequently

• Doctor to re-review if symptoms persist after 24-48 hours after treatment commences

• Avoid irritants for the urinary tract, such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, and alcohol

Treatment

A person's urine may contain bacteria without necessarily having an infection. Approximately 50% of older people with an indwelling catheter have bacteria in their urine without exhibiting any symptoms. Bacteria that cause UTI symptoms are treated with antibiotics once the infection is confirmed through urine lab result.
