Treatment of Ringworm

If ringworm infection is identified

Assess pain

Administer medication if prescribed by the doctor

Check skin integrity to prevent further infection

Educate the resident on ringworm and encourage them not to touch the lesions, as it may cause it to spread

The resident should use clean towels and washcloths every day

Thoroughly dry all areas of skin and skin folds that may retain moisture

Encourage the resident to wear loose clothing made of cotton, as it absorbs sweat better

Use standard and transmission-based precautions

Treatment

Depending on the severity of the ringworm infection, the doctor may prescribe several medications. Topical medications, such as antifungals, can be used to treat ringworm, or oral medications may be prescribed in severe cases. Topical treatment should continue for 1-2 weeks after the visible rash has disappeared to prevent a recurrence.
