Treatment of CRE

If a CRE infection has been identified, refer symptoms to the registered nurse

Nursing care

Assess for further signs of infection

Ensure contact precautions are taken with residents infected or colonised with CRE

When possible, residents with CRE will have a single room

PPE should be worn when caring for the resident, i.e. gloves, gown.

Visitors might also be asked to wear gloves and gowns

Healthcare providers and visitors remove their gowns and gloves upon leaving the room

Observe good hand hygiene

Promote antimicrobial stewardship

Treatment

It is challenging to treat Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae infections. CRE bacteria may be killed or inhibited from growing by combinations of antibiotics prescribed by a Doctor.
