Treatment of Conjunctivitis
If a conjunctivitis infection is identified, refer symptoms to the registered nurse
Assess pain
Apply cold compresses to relieve symptoms for about ten minutes when required on the affected eye
Residents with conjunctivitis should not share towels or linen
Hands should be washed frequently with soap and water before and after applying eye drops or cold compresses
Contact a doctor if there are any changes in vision or yellowish discharge from the eyes
Educate on hand washing and disposal of secretions properly to prevent infection from spreading
Treatment
Conjunctivitis can be treated in different ways depending on its cause. The eye should be gently washed multiple times daily with warm tap water-soaked cotton wool for all types of conjunctivitis. Infections caused by viruses improve without special treatment. The Doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointments for bacterial infections.
