Treatment of Bed Bugs

If your resident has bites or an allergic response to a bed bug infestation

Assess and monitor for pain

Administer medications to relieve symptoms if prescribed

Keep the skin clean and dry to avoid a secondary skin infection

Educate on avoiding scratching, as the bites will heal faster

Keep resident's nails short 

Monitor for signs of skin infection such as redness, swelling, pus-like discharge

Educate on opening blinds, allowing sunlight into bedroom daily and airing the bedding

Washing bedding in an appropriate hot wash will help to eradicate them

Use standard and transmission-based precautions

Move residents into a clean environment and isolate infested areas until bedbugs have been eradicated 

Treatment

In most cases, bed bug bites do not require treatment, the bite typically disappears within a week or two. The doctor may prescribe hydrocortisone cream or an oral antihistamine to ease symptoms. Washing and drying of linen at high temperatures and thorough cleaning of the environment are important during treatment to eradicate the infestation.
