Treatment of Athletes foot
If an athlete's foot infection is identified
Assess pain and itchiness
Administer medication prescribed by the doctor
Monitor redness, oozing, extreme cracking, or other skin changes
Before applying medications, ensure feet are thoroughly washed and dried, especially between the toes, and excess skin is removed carefully
Maintain a dry foot environment; small pieces of cotton or gauze can be placed between the toes at night to absorb moisture
Encourage cotton socks as they absorb sweat better than synthetic socks
Socks should be changed daily and laundered appropriately
Residents should alternate shoes, so shoes can dry completely before wearing them again
Use antifungal powder to protect against fungal infections
Use standard precautions to stop transmission
Use a single bathroom until the infection has cleared
TreatmentThe Doctor may prescribe a topical antifungal cream, powder or spray medication to treat the athletes foot. If medications do not effectively treat the infection, the doctor may prescribe a stronger topical medicated cream or oral antifungal medications. |
