Rhinovirus
What is it?
Rhinovirus is caused by viruses that inflame the nose and throat membranes. More than 200 viruses can cause colds, however, rhinovirus causes most common colds.
What are the symptoms?
- Sore throat
- Congestion
- Pressure in the sinuses
- Taste or smell loss
- Sneezing
- Fluid-filled nasal passages
- Throat drainage or postnasal drip
- Watery eyes
- Headache
- Throat discomfort
- Coughing
- Swollen lymph nodes
- General tiredness or fatigue
- Chills
- Body aches
- Fever
- Chest discomfort
- Breathing difficulty
Recovery from rhinovirus usually takes about 7-10 days. Some people with weakened immune systems, asthma, or respiratory conditions can develop serious illnesses like pneumonia or bronchitis.
Transmission
Sneezing, coughing, or speaking can release tiny droplets containing infectious agents. Droplets can land on surfaces and contaminate them so touching an contaminated surface and then touching your face can transmit rhinovirus. Rhinovirus can survive on surfaces for up to 24 hours.
Diagnosis
The Doctor will diagnose rhinovirus based on the symptoms. Rhinovirus symptoms and other infections are similar; a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) throat and nose swab test may be requested to rule out other infections.
