Healthcare Workers Cleaning Responsibilities

Healthcare workers assist in the outbreak cleaning process and must ensure the preparation of terminal cleaning of the isolation room for the cleaner.

The outbreak cleaning process occurs following the withdrawal of infection control isolation precautions or a resident's transfer, death, or discharge.

The Process

Wear transmission-based PPE appropriate to the specified outbreak

Strip the bed and clean with neutral detergent, diluted to the manufactures instructions, using a yellow cleaning cloth and equipment

Place used linen in a yellow linen bag and handle linen as little as possible, with minimum movement, to prevent microbial contamination of the air

Fill linen bags only to 3/4 full, then tie them securely and place them inside the doorway for removal

Dispose of all sharps into a yellow contaminated sharps container

All rubbish is to be disposed of into the yellow hazardous waste bag at the point of generation

Unused disposable items, such as sealed packs of gauze squares, dressing packs, etc., must be disposed of into clinical waste before leaving the room

Medical equipment, e.g., such as stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, thermometers, etc., must be wiped over with a neutral detergent which has been diluted according to the manufacturer's instructions and then wiped dry

Notify the cleaner that a final clean is required, waste and linen have been bagged appropriately and are ready for removal
