Donning and Doffing PPE
Personal protective equipment is a shield that protects both healthcare workers and residents and should be applied and removed in the correct sequence to avoid cross-contamination.
Donning involves putting on the required PPE before resident contact and must be performed in a certain order.
Doffing is the process of taking off PPE in a certain order and includes hand hygiene at certain intervals.
If the proper procedure is not followed, blood, body substances, and other potentially infectious material could be transferred to both healthcare workers and residents.
Best Practice Guidelines
Remove PPE in a way that reduces the risk of transmission of infectious organisms
Put on PPE before resident contact and generally before entering the room
Remove PPE at the doorway before leaving the residents' room or immediately outside of the room
