Challenges in AMS

The implementation of an Anti-microbial Stewardship (AMS) programme in residential aged care facilities can be a challenge.  This could be due to several contributing factors such as

Resident and/or family's expectations and understanding of AMS

Culture and change management issues

Healthcare workers' experience, training and understanding of AMS

Lack of onsite, or ease of access to, Doctors and/or pharmacy staff

It is essential in AMS that residents, families, and healthcare workers are educated on AMS programmes and informed that AMS culture is the best practice.

Due to the lack of Doctors and pharmacists, registered nurses must be vigilant in understanding the AMS program at their residential aged care facility and keep Doctors and pharmacists well informed about the AMS policy.
