Supporting Māori Culture in IPC
The IPC Lead will honour the cultural needs and values of Māori residents by providing ways to adapt infection prevention strategies, including policies and procedures, to respect and accommodate their culture. This can be done by
Developing and implementing culturally safe IPC strategies
Developing and implementing pro-equity IPC policies
Identifying specific procedures which will require additional care to respect and value the Māori culture
Providing education on culturally safe IPC strategies
Monitoring the implementation of IPC at all levels and across all services
To ensure that the IPC policies and procedures are respectful of their culture, Māori residents and their whānau should be actively encouraged, supported and included in all aspects of care and decision-making, including the implementation of standard and transmission-based precautions and the rationale behind them.
By ensuring all communications are culturally sensitive and inclusive, the IPC Lead will help to foster trust, compliance, and resilience in our residents, and by utilising te reo Māori where appropriate and providing translated materials, residents, whānau and visitors will understand what is required of them.
